Kenya is yet to start trying the only approved covid-19 drug on patients.
If it succeeds and the use continued, a patient will have to part with ksh Sh253,000 to get treated with remdesivir.
According to Dr. Loice Achieng Ombajo, the head of infectious diseases unit at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), world health Organisation said that as opposed to earlier agreements, chloroquine and HIV drugs lopinavir and ritonavir will not be tested.
Dr. Achieng said this while addressing all doctors accross the nation in a Webinar organised by Kenyatta National hospital aimed at sharing experiences in Covid-19 treatment.
The following hospitals have been selected for the study;
- Coast General Hospital
- Kenyatta National hospital
- Aga Khan University Hospital
- Kilifi Kemri-Wellcome
- Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital
- Kenyatta University Hospital.
Remedesivir is an injectable drug manufactured by the Gilead Sciences of United State.
So far ,it is the only drug authorised for treatment of Covid-19 patients by the US Food and Drug Administration and European Medicines Agency.
It was initially developed for the treatment of Ebola.
According to preliminary data from various clinical studies,drug has reduced hospitalisation period in some Covid-19 patients by about four days.
In the US, the manufacturer has tagged the price of remdesivir, which is in short supply, at $2,340 (about Sh 253,000) for a full treatment.
